Lina McLaidlaw s'éprend de Johnnie Aysgarth, rencontre dans le train, et l'epouse sans demander l'avis de ses parents. Johnnie, qui n'a pas de fortune personnelle, joue sans compter, et Lina, déçue, est prête à le quitter. Le père de Lina meurt sans laisser d'argent au couple et Johnnie, avec son ami Beaky, monte une operation immobilière spéculative...
